Year 11 homework Wednesday 26th January 2012
In today’s lesson we started to look at what the governments priorities are at the outbreak of war. You made a list of the things that you would do if you were in charge as a group activity. we then went one step further with this and looked at Censorship. I asked you to censor a news article on Dunkirk, This was when the british troops had got trapped on french beaches in Dunkirk, right at the start of World War Two. It could have been disaster for our troops.
We looked at these facts in class, and discussed which ones you would use and which you would not and why.
The advancing German Army trapped the British and French armies on the beaches around Dunkirk.
330,000 men were trapped here and they were a sitting target for the Germans.
Operation Dynamo was to get off of the beaches as many men as was possible.
The British troops, were professional soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force; trained men that we could not afford to lose.
From May 26th 1940, small ships transferred soldiers to larger ones which then brought them back to a port in southern Britain.
The beach at Dunkirk was on a shallow slope so no large boat could get near to the actual beaches where the men were.
Smaller boats were needed to take on board men who would then be transferred to a larger boat based further off shore.
800 of these “little ships” were used.
During the nine day period the Southern Railway laid on a total of 327 special trains, which cleared 180,982 troops from Dover. 4,500 casualties were treated at the town’s Buckland Hospital and all but 50 of these seriously ill men were saved.
All of their heavy equipment had been abandoned. Six destroyers had been sunk, along with eight personnel ships and around 200 small craft, from a total of around 860 vessels of all sizes.
The Germans had taken over a million Allied prisoners in three weeks at a cost of 60,000 casualties,
I asked you to write a 200 word article, Think about your headline it needs to look like a success for the british! and I said that this film clip may help.
Remember the deadline is next Monday 30th January for this.
No excuses! Some of you are already on a homework warning!
Let me know if you are stuck Miss Bradshaw
